Breakdown Delays Trains

A broken down locomotive caused delays of more than an hour for train passengers between Wellington and the Hutt Valley.

The locomotive was travelling from the Wairarapa when it broke down between Petone and Ngauranga about 7.30am yesterday.

The train blocked the line for services from the Hutt Valley into the capital, causing delays of up to 70 minutes. Buses were organised to take commuters into the city.

"We're aware that the delay inconvenienced many of our customers and we apologise for the late running of services," KiwiRail national passenger manager Ross Hayward said.

Motorists on State Highway 1 near Lindale Farm faced delays after a nose-to-tail crash about 11.20am a kilometre north of Paraparaumu.
