Train Derailed By Rocks On Line

Johannesburg - A train driver and his assistant were injured when their goods train derailed and overturned near an informal settlement in Boksburg on Tuesday afternoon, Netcare 911 said.

Spokesperson Chris Botha said the driver of the train, which was carrying ammonium hydroxide, and his assistant sustained minor injuries.

They were treated on scene before being taken to hospital.

It was unclear what caused the train to derail, but Botha said large rocks seemed to have been placed on the railway line and caused the locomotive to leave the tracks and overturn.

Meanwhile, a Transnet fire vehicle on its way to the train accident scene overturned when it tried to make a U-turn at the intersection of the R554 and Barry Marais Road.

Botha said one of the crew in the vehicle was seriously injured, but he was stabilised on scene before being taken to hospital.
