Via Rail Cars Moving Again Between Edmonton, Winnipeg After Derailment

Via Rail Cars Moving Again Between Edmonton, Winnipeg After Derailment - 11/12/2009

EDMONTON - Via Rail is getting its cars back on track after a train derailment in Saskatchewan stranded some of its passengers.

The company says service has been restored between Edmonton and Winnipeg after several C-N Rail tanker cars jumped the tracks near Spy Hill, Sask., last weekend and caught fire.

People living near the area had to be evacuated because of the smoke from the burning rail cars, which were carrying propane, plastic pellets and benzene, which can be deadly if inhaled in large quantities.

Via had to make alternate arrangements for passengers who were stuck in Edmonton and Winnipeg because of the derailment.

The Transportation Safety Board is investigating the cause of the derailment.
