To support our development, we are looking for a:

GROUP LEADER, SWAT
Reports to: Manager, Software
Based in Toronto

To supervise and direct the duties of staff members assigned to the functional work area, including the coordination of activities/time and delegation of workload. To ensure that work performed by incumbent and his/her assigned staff meets overall product requirements, consistent with the standards of Thales Rail Signalling Solutions Inc.

Your main responsibilities are:

Ø Supervises, motivates, trains and appraises employees performance.
Ø Plans, prioritizes and schedules workload for functional work area.
Ø Approves test plans, test procedures and reports produced by the SWAT department.
Ø Directs and delegates specific tasks to its team members.
Ø Monitors, tracks and reports on workload results by continuous communication to incumbents, Manager / Department Head, and staff.
Ø Reviews and approves all work assigned, identifying to staff errors and omissions in requirements and compliance with company policies & procedures. Ensures that problems are resolved.
Ø Responsible to manage and complete work/projects assigned to own area of responsibility.
Ø Participate in the software design and peer reviews, and in the requirement analysis process as requested.
Ø Assists Manager / Department Head on staffing plans, cost estimates and input for capital and expense budgets.
Ø Responsible for providing support and input to the Manager / Department Head for staff planning and to ensure maintenance of skill base, including hiring and firing.
Ø Works in conjunction with Manager / Department Head to ensure all recommendations (such as training, tools, etc.) adhere to overall departmental budget.
Ø Provide support to proposals activities.
Ø Keeps abreast of trends and current relevant technology.
Ø Evaluates new products and ideas for merit, (making suggestions to improve current in-house products(s), and processes.).
Ø Evaluates new ways of adapting relevant new technology.
Ø Provides support to the test & integration process improvement initiatives within the department.
Ø To form and lead a cohesive, dynamic Software Assessment function.
Ø To maintain a balance between the technical and managerial aspects of the position Group Leader, providing both a technical expertise for staff and supporting administrative functions.
Ø To deliver high quality software, on time and within budget.
Ø To create a highly motivated and productive work environment where the accomplishments of the group reflect a successful team product
Ø To lead a SWAT team in testing a subsystem for all projects
Ø To be responsible with regards to the quality of the software testing, its completeness, integrity, accuracy, compliance to the software requirements
Ø To provide for Project Planning and Re-planning, including the preparation of all artefacts required (estimates, schedules, estimates to complete, work breakdown structures and Test Plans, Test Procedures, Test Reports, traceability matrices) to deliver CENELEC compliant software products.
Ø To maintain Software Project Tracking by monitoring performance against budget and schedule, performance metrics collection and interpretation, weekly and monthly reporting.
Ø To perform early risk identification and mitigation through corrective actions.
Ø To provide for resource management, including organizing and developing staff, task assignments, performance appraisals, manpower forecasts within the group, preparation of job descriptions, job interviews, motivating, coaching and training.
Ø Responsible for the implementation of a vigorous software assessment program.
Ø Responsible for maintaining adherence to company and departmental standard processes and policies.
Ø Responsible for working with the Systems Design, Software Development Teams, and Project Office to plan and provide an efficient and thorough software assessment programme.
Ø To support software departments in the development of an overall software development program, specifically w.r.t. continuous testing of changes and validation of software requirements for every software release.
Ø To investigate technical problems and implement corrective action while providing technical assistance to SWAT team test engineers.
Ø To support the Department Head in the preparation of capital budgets, operating budgets, department wide training plans, facilities planning and tools acquisition.
Ø To support Marketing in the preparation of proposals and customer presentations as required.
Ø To keep abreast of technological advancements and relevant technologies, recommending improvements in Process, Product and Tools.
Ø To propose and implement approved process improvements (such as increased test automation) to increase the effectiveness of the test process

Ideally you have:

Ø University degree in Computer Sciences, Engineering or equivalent.
Ø Minimum 8 years relevant experience in software development or software testing of real-time applications, ideally on safety critical or system critical applications.
Ø Development/test experience in C under Windows
Ø Scripts development experience and automated testing is an asset.
Ø Ability to manage projects within budget/schedule in a challenging environment.
Ø Thorough knowledge of modern software engineering practices, methods and tools, including test and verification methods.
Ø Experience in real-time object-oriented software
Ø Development experience in C
Ø Ability to ascertain the skills and competency of staff assigned
Ø Good organizational abilities.
Ø Good interpersonal skills, writing and verbal skills, as well as people supervision skills.
Ø Knowledge of SELTRAC signalling system and software architecture an asset.
